The Medicare Misconception
One of the most common misconceptions among families is that Medicare will pay for assisted living or long-term care. Medicare does not pay for non-medical, custodial care (like assisted living or memory care).
What Medicare DOES Cover
Medicare is a health insurance program that covers medical necessities. It will cover:
- Hospital stays
- Doctor visits
- Prescription drugs
- Short-term rehabilitation in a skilled nursing facility (up to 100 days, under very specific conditions, usually following a qualifying hospital stay of at least 3 days)
- Hospice care
- Some short-term, medically necessary home health care (like physical therapy or skilled nursing visits)
What Medicare DOES NOT Cover
Medicare will not pay for custodial care, which includes help with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, eating, and using the bathroom. Therefore, it does not cover:
- Assisted Living rent or care fees
- Memory Care rent or care fees
- Independent Living
- Long-term stays in a nursing home
- Non-medical home care (companionship, light housekeeping)
Planning Your Finances
Because Medicare won’t cover long-term care, families must rely on private pay (savings, pensions, Social Security), Long-Term Care Insurance, VA Benefits, or Medicaid (ALTCS in Arizona). Our advisors can help you explore your options and find a community that fits your budget.
